Travel by car
There are two major highways that pass through Erlangen. The A3 runs northwest/southeast between Würzburg and Regensburg while the A73 runs north/south between Bamberg and Nuremberg (Nürnberg).
A3: Take exit number 84 “Erlangen-Tennenlohe” in the direction of Erlangen (Bundesstraße B4). Exit the B4 at “Gräfenberg/Erlangen Ost ” Upon exiting you will enter a circle. Turn left in the circle (second exit) so that you are heading north on Kurt-Schumacher Strasse. Keep straight on, passing Cauer-Str., and turn left at the next street Erwin-Rommel-Straße. The parking garage for the Inorganic Chemistry building is approximately 50m ahead on the left.
Travel by train
Tickets for the German train system can be purchased at the station just before departure, but during peak hours and holidays a ticket and seat reservation can be purchased ahead of time at www.bahn.de (the page is available in several languages including English). From the Erlangen train station you can take a 10 minute taxi ride for about 10 euros or a 15 to 20 minute bus ride for approximately 1.50 euros.
The Technische Facultät area (Technical Faculty), including the Inorganic Chemistry building, is serviced by buses 287 and 293.
To reach the bus stop for bus 287 exit the train station to the east through the main entrance and the stop is directly in front of the station. The train station is in the middle of the bus 287 loop. There are typically several buses traveling the 287 route with one bus departing the station to the east towards the Technische Fakultät and one departing west from the station towards the western suburbs of Erlangen. Make sure to take bus 287 that stops on the same side of the road as the train station. You need to exit the bus one stop before the Sebaldussiedlung at the Technische Fakultät.
To reach the bus stop for bus 293 exit the train station to the east through the main entrance. In front of you will be a church, and the stop for bus 293 is behind the church. The train station is in the middle of the bus 293 loop. There are typically several buses traveling the 293 route with one bus departing the station to the east towards the Technische Fakultät and one departing west from the station towards the western suburbs of Erlangen. Taking bus 293 west will eventually bring you to the Technische Fakultät (and Anorganische Chemie building), but will add an extra 40 minutes to your trip. To reach the bus stop for bus 293 exit the train station to the east through the main entrance. Walk around the church to Hugenottenplatz. The plaza is situated between the church and the Sparkasse bank. The eastern portion of the bus 293 loop ends at the Sebaldussiedlung. You need to exit the bus one stop before the Sebaldussiedlung at the Technische Fakultät.

Travel by plane
The closest airport to Erlangen is the Nuremberg Airport (airport website in English). You can also fly into the Munich or Frankfurt airports and take a train to Erlangen. The train will take approximately 2 hours from Munich, or 3 hours from Frankfurt. Round trip tickets for weekdays in the spring of 2008 range from 100 to 110 euros, but discounts of 25% or 50% are available if the tickets are bought one to two weeks in advance.
From the Nuremberg airport you can take a taxi or a bus. A taxi will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes and cost 25 to 30 euro. Taking the bus can take up to 45 minutes and will cost between 3 and 4 euros as you have to buy a ticket that allows you to travel through 4 zones.
Take the bus to “Thon” (bus line 32). Change in “Thon” to the bus to “Erlangen Hugenottenplatz” (bus line 30 or 30 E). Exit at “Erlangen Süd”. From here you have to walk to our institute (it should require about 10 min.). The bus station “Erlangen Süd” is located south of the institute (see the generalized map of erlangen). You will have to walk up the Egerlandstraße and the Anorganische Chemie building will be at the end of Egerlandstraße on the right.
